BAY DE NOC COMMUNITY COLLEGE UNIVERSITY
CENTER
Escanaba, Michigan
Square Feet: 40,596
The design of the new University Center in plan
meshes with the context of the existing campus with
enclosed connections to the Science Building and
Health and Applied Technology Center. The orthogonal
grid of the new building matches the campus pattern
with an extended canopy at the building entrance,
which also serves as a new entrance image for the
campus southern face.
The new building exteriors are primarily dark
gray insulated aluminum panels following the lead
of the Learning Resources Center. The silver frames
and silver aluminum panels occur at all the locations
that natural light enters the building including
doors, windows, and clerestories. This natural
“light” is a direct response to the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan northern climate and
the relatively long and dreary winters. The brick
service core matches the brick on all the 1960’s
original campus buildings.
